Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, Jan. 21. Whether you’re looking for classroom activities or lesson plans, there are plenty of resources out there. Check them out.

In addition, if you’re in Des Moines on Saturday, Jan. 19, the Iowa Commission on the Status of African-Americans and the Iowa Department of Human Rights will host the 30th Anniversary Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

The no-cost event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the State Historical Building, 600 E. Locust.

The performance presents the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, starting on Dec. 1, 1955, when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person, leading up to the assassination of King on April 4, 1968. This depiction will give insight into King’s love of his family, his sense of humor, and the incredible challenge that African-Americans faced in fighting for basic human rights.
