If you experienced buffering issues while streaming the basketball games there are a few possible causes. According to the NFHS Network website, one issue is with your connection speed with your ISP. NFHS recommends a speed of at least 2 Mbps.
NFHS also recommends you use the Chrome browser. Using a different browser could lead to buffering or freezing issues.
If you still experience buffering and you are using Chrome and above the recommended connection speed you may need to clear your cache and cookies and reload the page.
If you are still experiencing issues you will need to contact NFHS Network support. Their contact page is linked below.

We currently have no students or staff who have tested positive at this time, meaning all ten day quarantine requirements have expired. 5.9% (22 individuals) are currently quarantining due to exposure, direct contact, or due to waiting for test results. Both numbers are down from last week.
Have a great week!

2020 Winter Sports COVID Guidelines
Spectator Guidelines
Masks are required for all spectators (adults and students) at West Harrison/River Valley Conference extracurricular events.
Spectator limits will be put in place according to the governor’s mandates:
-Each team will be allowed a maximum of 2 spectators per athlete suited up:
-Passes will be handed out to the athletes and they give them out to whomever they chose.
-These passes are the responsibility of each individual.
-These passes are needed to get into all conference home and away games.

Good Morning West Harrison!
As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday I wanted to send out a message to provide some clarification. We have had some cases of COVID, but the percentage of positive cases is low. We have also had some quarantines related to school but have had no confirmed cases of transmission take place at school. In reality, school seems to be one of the safest places to be in regards to COVID.
As most of you know, the Governor issued a proclamation this week that essentially shut down junior high and youth activities until December 10th and limited attendance at high school activities to two guests per participant. The Governor mentioned re-evaluating things next week.
At West Harrison, our plan continues to be to provide face-to-face instruction to students unless the Governor orders schools to be closed, the IDPH or county health advise that closing schools is necessary, or we have a situation where we do not have enough healthy staff to provide services for students. Barring one of these three things happening, we plan to continue to stay open.
With that said we all know that things can change quickly so we are doing our best to be prepared. You may be hearing that staff are practicing virtual learning with kids at school, talking about scheduling, preparing to send materials home, and discussing how we would provide meals. If you would like to see our proposed virtual learning schedules and information, here is our Virtual Learning page.
All of these things are happening, not because we plan to close the school, but so we are ready in the event closing becomes necessary at some point. We discussed sending materials home over Thanksgiving with our elementary students in order to evaluate any issues that may occur. We decided not to do so.
Please review your plans for your children if the school were moved to 100% virtual instruction. Take some time to review the Virtual School page. Again, this is all being done to be prepared. It is our hope that it will never be necessary to use any it.
I hope this helps clarify our plans for all of you. It continues to be the intent of West Harrison to have face-to-face instruction take place if at all possible.
Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving!
Marty

Due to the governor's recent mandate all JH sports and extra curricular activities are suspended until at least Dec. 11th. Tonight's game at West Monona is canceled.

The winter scrimmage scheduled for Nov. 19th and the Pride Challenge scrimmage scheduled for Nov. 20th have been canceled.

Due to the governor's recent mandates Little Hawks wrestling is canceled for tonight and suspended until at least Dec. 11th.

Good Afternoon West Harrison Families!
West Harrison Community Schools has seen an increase in Covid-19 related cases over the last week. As of today we have forty students or staff quarantining due to direct contact (11.4%) and fifteen students or staff (4.3%) that have tested positive, are awaiting test results, or awaiting direction from their medical provider. We have not had any confirmed cases of spread at school but have had quarantines take place because of contact with individuals who later received a positive test result. The majority of our positive cases and quarantines are related to exposure with family and work contacts.
As cases in the area rise, it is critical that everyone does their part in taking the appropriate precautions to limit the spread of Covid-19. We need your help if we are going to be able to stay in school including: having kids that are symptomatic stay home, wear masks, and wash hands frequently.
The Board and staff are committed to continuing face to face learning if at all possible and there are no immediate plans to move to virtual learning. That said, things can change quickly with this pandemic and we would encourage everyone to review your contingency plan for where your children would go should we reach a point where we have to shift to 100% virtual learning.
We greatly appreciate all your flexibility and support!
Marty Fonley
Superintendent

Due to Governor Reynold's public measures, spectators will be limited at all West Harrison events until at least Nov. 30th. We are allowed two spectators per athlete. Passes have been handed out to each athlete and these are needed to get into all games- home and away. Masks are also required at all events.

Previously, we let you know that meals would be free through December, but now, we have been approved to offer free meals until the end of May. These meals are convenient, safe and nutritious. Support our school meals program while saving your family time and money. There is still a cost for doubles and extras, but every student can have free breakfast and lunch every day.

Please send any West Harrison masks (gray with the Hawkeye in the bottom right corner) back to school and ensure your child has a personal mask when they head to school in the morning, either on the bus or in the building.
We are working to avoid students being sent home because they do not have a mask when boarding the bus. We are working to avoid students being sent home becuase we no longer have our cloth masks available due to students wearing them home and not returning them to school.

Hello Hawkeye Families!
This is a reminder of our scheduled 1:30 early out tomorrow, September 2. We know, we know...we just finished a week of early outs! This was already scheduled on our board-approved calendar. Last week was a change made due to COVID. Thank you for all you are doing to support our students.
Calendar link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RsQlTCoRRGqAhrG0JWor15jbUY7_C0Pj/view?usp=sharing
A couple other reminders:
*Please make sure your child is getting on the bus with a mask. We do have some extras, but they should be used only in emergency and not everyday. Also, remind them to wear the mask throughout the ride. Mrs. Ring will begin sending Bus Conduct Report Letters home this week.
*If your child is too young to be dropped off at their stop alone, please be at the location on time. We do have to stick to our route pickup/drop off times. We cannot leave students unattended and this creates a problem for our drivers.

Harrison County Public Health administrator, Brad Brake, visited today for a Q and A with our 7th-12th grade students. Students had some in-depth and thoughtful questions. We feel like we understand the “why” just a bit more, which is so important for teens (and adults)!
All of us on campus, students included, are players on the West Harrison team!
Thank you, Mr. Brake, and HCPH for your support and important work! We appreciate the positive relationship we have built and know that if we do have to work together in the future, it will be a positive collaboration. 🖤🤍❤️

Jr. High football practice will be from 3:30 pm until about 5:00 pm. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The players will be supervised at school until practice time.

Notice to all Hawkeye fans. Homecoming was moved to September 25th and parent's night will be September 11th.

West Harrison will be playing volleyball matches on Tuesday (Aug. 25) in Council Bluffs and on Thursday (Aug. 27th) in Correctionville. Both sites require spectators to wear masks.

What a wonderful first day!
Students, thank you for being part of our team, working together to make our first day back such a success. You were awesome!
Parents and Guardians, thank you for preparing your child to be ready to face the challenges we have this year. They were all so wonderful and truly prepared to get back to work!!
Teachers and staff, THANK YOU for putting in the time to make our return to school such an outstanding success!
We are all a team, working together for our students and each other. Thank you, all!
I promise—more pictures tomorrow!

Hawkeye families,
Our District Leadership Team is meeting weekly to make decisions about what our Return to Learn plan looks like when we return to school on August 24. We will update everyone via social media, text messaging, and email as soon as we can.
Our goal is to have students return to campus, but we also want to ensure our policy/procedures will mitigate exposure and is something we can sustain over time.
We are following guidance from the Department of Education and Harrison County Public Health. As we all know, change happens quickly and we have to respond accordingly and adjust our own planning as well.
Student learning and the safety of everyone on campus is of utmost importance and we want to be sure to make the best decisions for all.
We will be sending out our 2020-2021 calendar soon as well. :)
Thank you for your understanding and support!

Help needed, Hawkeyes! We are updating our commons area and are in need of volunteers to help with painting! We’ve made some excellent progress this week, but will need more help to finish.
If you can volunteer some time to paint, we will be working Wednesday and Thursday this week and Monday-Thursday next week (or until we’re done!). We start at 10 and have been finishing around 4.
Please consider helping update our Commons area—it will look amazing and you will have been part of the process!

Parent's night for baseball will be Monday, July 6th at approximately 7:00 pm before the varsity game with Audubon. Softball parent's night will be Thursday, July 9th at 5:00 pm before the varsity game with Logan-Magnolia.

Monday, June 29th, will be the school food and nutrition programs last day for providing summer meals. Thank you to everyone who utilized our services this school year.

Unfortunately, we will be moving graduation to the high school gym due to the threat of severe weather.
This does not allow as much seating for families, so please consider this as we socially distance household groups during the ceremony. We may have to ask non-immediate family members or friends to move to the commons area if the need arises.
Thank you for understanding and we will see everyone tonight at 6 pm for our 2020 graduation!
We will also work to livestream the ceremony on our facebook page for those who want to join us virtually.

Ball games have been cancelled at West Harrison for this evening due to weather.

Registration will be August 12th from 9-7:00. More information to follow

Hawkeye Parents,
The Technology Access Survey can be found at the link below. Responses from this survey will help the Iowa Department of Ed prioritize $26.2 million in federal relief through the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER), which focuses on providing and expanding broadband access and improving access to technology in other ways. The survey is open until June 24. The survey is very short and your input is extremely important. ONLY FILL THIS OUT ONCE, PER FAMILY!
http://bit.ly/iowatechsurvey
If you do not have access to the internet, we can fill it out for you via a call to school or will send you a paper copy through the mail. Please call into school and leave a message.
Thank you!

We have GOOD news!
We just received word from the Governor and HCPH that we can continue with a graduation ceremony! It will look different, but will be ONE CEREMONY with EVERYONE!
More information will be sent out soon with more guidelines, but here is what we know:
1. It will be held June 21 at 6 PM. It will take place outside at the football field.
2. We will follow social distancing guidelines, similar to that of our ball games.
3. There will be a reception line, just no hugs or handshakes.
4. Seniors will choose a special person in their life to sit with during the ceremony. This person will present the graduate with their diploma.
Seniors:
* Mrs. Birdsall will send a survey to vote for attendants/ushers. VOTE!
* We need to practice! We will meet FRIDAY, June 19 at 8 - 9:30 am. Breakfast will be provided. Look for a Calendar invite and plan to be there.
* You will need to be in the Commons for robe fitting and preparation on June 21 at 5 pm
Please share this information with seniors and their families to ensure that everyone is informed!

West Harrison Hawkeyes, our fitness centers remain closed. Unfortunately, we are unable to open our fitness center, though the Governor has allowed fitness centers to reopen given a specific set of circumstances. We are unable to monitor and enforce the limitation of participants, social distancing and hygiene requirements that are required of fitness centers that reopen. Please know, though, that all facility contracts that were active our first day of closure, will have their contracts extended for the timeframe our facilities were unable to be accessed.

Last Chance to pick up your child's items at school is tomorrow, May 6th 10-11 am and 6-7 pm. Seniors: Check your email for an urgent message you need to respond to and don't forget to meet at the high school parking lot at 4:30 pm on Thursday, May 7th for the senior parade!

A HUGE shout out to ALL STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS that help us feed our students! To date, we have served 11,886 meals! Go Hawkeyes!

Seniors: Please take a few minutes to answer the Denison KDSN radio survey questions that were forwarded to you from Mrs. Marshall & Mrs. Birdsall for the West Harrison Class Days spotlight next week.

Due to the current health pandemic, the WIGSL board has decided that we cannot consciously continue with plans to have the 2020 softball season. We make this announcement with heavy hearts, as it was not an easy decision to make. We are heartbroken and frustrated over this situation but we must put the safety of our players and families above all else.
Moving forward:
June 1st the state of Iowa will announce if they will have summer sports. If they play softball, we will then post the town/coaches information on our website so you can have contacts to schedule non-affiliated WIGSL games at your own risk. If this happens we will only post information with your permission. If your town chooses to do this, please make sure you are contacting your insurance providers for more information before you schedule anything.
Please stay safe. Thank-you for your patience throughout this process. Please relay this information to your players and coaches. Let us know if you have any other questions.

“Light Up Iowa” at West Harrison CSD
#lightupIA @ihsada
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44A9UwM3GV0

West Harrison community members- the "Light Up Iowa" event will take place from 8:00 to 8:25 p.m. at the football, baseball, and softball fields. The time represents the amount of days in which students have not been in school (1 minute for each day missed). After talking with the administration, it was decided that you may drive by or through the parking lot. Please do not stop and get out of your car. This will continue every Friday through the end of May. A YouTube video will be posted on the West Harrison website on Saturday.

Our small town is ever changing with the state of emergency our country is facing. Our local community is suffering in many ways but continues to support one another through various social distancing means. In an effort to show our schools and students that the State of Iowa recognizes their loss of activities, including sports, the Iowa High School Athletics Directors Association (IHSADA) is asking Iowa schools to participate in a “Light up Iowa” tribute. Each Friday night starting at 8, the football and baseball field lights will be seen from the sky as they are lit in honor of each day we have been out of school. We ask that community members keep social distancing practices and avoid gathering at the ball fields. If you follow social media posts and want to post your own image, please use the hashtag #lightupIA and include @ihsada.

The high school boy's and girl's track season has been officially canceled by the IHSAA and IGHSAU. There has been no decision on the baseball season.

West Harrison Host Special Olympics Basketball Tournament
West Harrison hosted the West Region Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 1st. This is the fifth year that West Harrison has hosted this tournament and it has become an event that many students look forward to. There were 28 teams from around western Iowa, from Sioux Center to Griswold. There were 3 on 3 half court divisions as well as 5 on 5 full court games. There were a total of 28 games played over 5 courts from 9:00 am to about 2:30 pm.
We had 12 student and 4 adult volunteers this year. The students worked the scoreboard, scorebook, kept time, gave out ribbons, and any other jobs they were asked to do.

I attended a Webinar put on by the Iowa Department of Public Health today regarding a measles case diagnosed in Iowa this week. The person who tested positive for Measles is not vaccinated and recently traveled outside of the US. Health officials are recommending if you are not vaccinated against Measles or are unsure to get vaccinated ASAP. Signs and symptoms of Measles generally appear 7 to 14 days after a person is infected, and begin with high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes and Koplik spots (spots that appear in the mouth before the skin rash appears). Measles can be fatal, so if you are immunocompromised or are not vaccinated due to religious exemption, or unsure if you are adequately vaccinated, you should discuss with your healthcare provider ways to protect yourself from contracting the virus or spreading to those who are compromised. You may also contact Harrison County Public Health for more information on the Measles Virus, and prevention at 712-644-2220. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Students working on Las Fallas. But what are Las Fallas?
The Fallas is a traditional celebration held every year in the city of Valencia, Spain to commemorate Saint Joseph. Artists create wonderful sculptures and they are displayed on the streets from March 15th to 19th. On the final night of Fallas, around midnight on March 19th these Fallas are burnt as huge bonfires.
This year at West Harrison Spanish students created their own Fallas again. The theme was The Adventures of Jules Verne. These are the wonderful projects done by my Spanish classes.
Great thanks to the Missouri Valley Kiwanis mini-grants for giving my classes a mini grant to prepare for Fallas.
Thank you to the administration for allowing me to teach my classes about one of the many traditions we have in Spain.
I love my students. Congratulations for your great job!! Every year you do a better job.
I am really proud of you!!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR
With spring right around the corner (fingers crossed) I wanted to send out a reminder to parents to start thinking about getting your student ready for the next upcoming school year. State Law says your child must be current on vaccinations prior to entering school! Students cannot attend public school if they are not current on vaccinations, or have a medical (signed by a physician) or religious exemption (notarized) on file. You may contact the school nurse (712-646-2231) or Harrison County Public Health (712-644-2220) with questions or concerns regarding this topic. Thank you in advance for taking time to review this topic. Respectfully, Deb Evans, RN, BS West Harrison CSD School Nurse.

West Harrison Host Special Olympics Basketball Tournament
West Harrison hosted the West Region Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2nd. This is the fourth year that West Harrison has hosted this tournament and it has become an event that many students look forward to. There were 23 teams from around western Iowa, from Sioux Center to Griswold. There were 3 on 3 half court divisions as well as 5 on 5 full court games. There were a total of 24 games played over 5 courts from 9:30 am to about 1:30 pm.
We had 14 student volunteers this year. The students worked the scoreboard, scorebook, kept time, gave out ribbons, and any other jobs they were asked to do.
There were many remarks made by the Special Olympic Members as well as parents on how well the students did their jobs. They were all impressed by our facilities and our workers. The students did a great job and represented West Harrison as outstanding people.
Volunteers: Kaylee Woodside, Kira Anderson, Katie Gore, Lydia Gilgen, Kierstyn Bieler, Austin Acker, Hunter Hansen, Grace Thomas, Nick Rife, Joslynn Thomas, Chenoa Bowman, Logan King, Chloe Gilgen, and Hannah Thomas.
Also, thank you to the booster club for doing the concession stand and the following teachers and community members for their help: Kathy Glennie, Joe McMinamen, Tara Rife, and Carla Carritt.
If I missed anybody I apologize. Great job West Harrison!

Hi! We’re Emily, Haleigh, Maren, and Morgan from the West Harrison FCCLA chapter. For one of our community service projects, we have decided to make chemo care packages and cancer care pillows for residents in the Lakeside Breast Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Cancer is a issue we have all faced in our families and communities. We would like your help to collect items and monetary donations to fund our project and make the days of those recovering from treatments better and more comfortable. The chemo care packages will consist of recreational items, such as crosswords, and necessary items featured on the list. The cancer care pillows are heart-shaped pillows that patients can put under their arms for pain relief after surgery.
Thank you to all! Your help is greatly appreciated!
