A letter from boys basketball coach, Rowdy Evans, to the Hawkeye Nation. 🖤🤍🏀 The team is heading back to Des Moines today to watch the remainder of the tournament as well. Here it is, if you would like to be able to read it better: Dear Hawkeye Nation: The West Harrison Boys Basketball Team would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported us this year while we made our first trip to the state tournament. The amount of support from the administration, the school staff, the students, our parents and the community was almost overwhelming. We can not explain how much your support and encouragement meant to each individual on our team, our managers and the coaching staff. If we had to thank everyone individually who supported us on our journey to the “Well” this year, I am sure I would leave someone out and this would take 4 to 5 pages to complete. So, please accept this letter as our sincere thanks to everyone in our community. When I looked in the stands on Monday in Des Moines, it filled me with school spirit and pride to see that we brought the largest crowd in the 1A field and the best fans in high school basketball. I can’t speak for everyone on the team, but I am sure they each felt the same way. Our small community is the best and it was so special when we left on Monday morning that each town in our school district had fire trucks as part of the parade; that is what being a community is all about and shows the level of support that each town gives our school district. We may be small, but we are mighty tight and proud community filled with great people. I am so proud to be the coach of this team and so happy that our community got to be part of the ride with us, as we became the first team in school history to make the state tournament. It was a magical season full of ups, and a few downs, but a stellar season for sure. As a team, we wish we could have given our fan base a better 1st quarter in Des Moines, but the boys’ hearts showed through for the remaining 3 quarters, as they never gave up or gave in when they certainly could have after our rough start. While disappointment was evident in our locker room after the game, it doesn’t discount the fact that only 8 out of 155 teams get to end their season in Wells Fargo Arena and a little school from Western Iowa that most people never heard of got to be a part of that 8! I will leave Hawkeye Nation with a couple of thoughts as we conclude our season. First, this may be the end of this season but with no seniors, it isn’t the end of the run for these boys. We will be back next year, bigger & better than ever as we start our “reckoning” tour in our second march to Des Moines and Wells Fargo Arena as we plan to play on Friday next season. Next year we will not be the little school that could, but a growing basketball power in the west. Secondly, I challenge all our youth basketball players (boys or girls) to dedicate yourselves to the time & hard work it takes to be the best that you can be. I asked this season’s junior & sophomore class to trust the process and they did, as when you trust the process, work harder than most and make the time commitment that it takes to be great, eventually the process loves you back. This season’s team is a perfect example of that. No one remembers that you were 0-10 in 4th grade, people remember that you were great in high school. Finally, I would like to conclude with this, if any youth coaches in any sport ever need assistance getting started, setting up practices, running practices, finding a place to play, etc., my cell number is (712)216-2299. I am always willing to assist when I can. Again, thank you so much to everyone in Hawkeye Nation for this special season, Head Coach Rowdy Evans and the rest of the West Harrison Hawkeye Boys Basketball Team
